Older Adults vote absentee due to health, transportation and many other good reasons including mobility issues and accessibility of the voting locations. Absentee voting is for those who cannot get to the polls and this bill defeats that purpose.

DRW is concerned that provisions related to absentee voting would be a barrier for some voters with disabilities.A broad exemption for all voters with disabilities and older adults will ensure that AB 898 does not create new barriers for these voters

Requiring newly registered voters to vote in-person at the polling site the first time may keep some older/disabled voters from being able to cast their votes. We recommend the proposal include a broad exemption for all older & disabled voters.

Specifically we oppose the measure requiring an elector to vote in person the first time after registering online or by mail. This is bad policy for any voter but especially so for people with disabilities.
